Monthly test of Bibb County's outdoor warning siren system. This siren is a Whelen Vortex, located in the industrial district in Macon, west of the Middle Georgia Regional Airport. This particular Vortex is programmed with the wail tone being its proprietary signal, regardless of the activation code sent to it. As you can tell, it appears to be having some controller issues, as it keeps restarting after a certain period of time, and does not like to cancel the signal in process when it should.

Monthly test of Houston County's Whelen WPS-2900 outdoor warning siren system. This particular siren is located at Bonaire Middle School in Bonaire, next to the school's ballfields.

Here is a system test of my ESC-864 controller. It will be used with a Omni-directional WPS-2702(was a WPS-2705 The speakers are not attached. I tried the PA function with one 400 Watt speaker And the feedback echoed into the neighborhood. I'll have to make a something to muffle the sound.

Monthly test of the countywide outdoor warning siren system, consisting of 33 of these Whelen WPS-2909 units, and one older Federal Signal 2-240 (privately-owned). This is unit #20 in the system, located near Veterans High School on Old Perry Road in Kathleen. I was about 1120ft north of the siren, and there were ~15mph south winds present (blowing toward the siren from my location), which made the siren seem really quiet. Another interesting note: I was able to hear my Federal Signal Model 5 (coming from my house) during the alert portion of the county system, which was about 2 miles due west from where I was. The siren is in my garage facing east, which had the door open at the time, and it was absolutely amazing I was able to hear it! Unfortunately due to the wind, the camera couldn't quite pick it up.

This is a weekly test of the Weather Siren System in Orange County, Indiana. Tests are usually conducted on most Fridays at 12 Noon EST (11:00 CST), weather permitting. The sirens are normally sounded for a full, three minute alert or attack cycle depending on how the siren(s) was set up. Orange County's sirens are operated by the Orange County Sheriff's Dept. This particular siren is located on SW 3RD St. & W Water St. nearby the park. There is also another Whelen Hornet located by the Paoli Community Hospital which I have recorded before on my old camera. There is even the possibility of there being a third siren East of town because when I recorded this I could faintly hear something coming from that direction. However it could have also been an echo. The installation seems fairly new and is an indirect replacement to an older siren(s) possibly once located downtown. It is unknown what the older siren may be but recently I have found an old Sterling K siren (not active) located in West Baden (next to a Hornet) which is also in Orange County. It is possible that Paoli may have had an old Sterling as well. I recorded this Hornet because I didn't feel like recording yet another Tempest siren. This siren tested about five minutes late. I was starting to think the dispatchers were either too busy or forgot about the test and were not going to sound them. Because of this, I was extremely surprised to hear this siren go off. Weekly noon test of one of Dooly County's Whelen outdoor warning sirens, which is part of a system consisting of 7 Hornets and 2 Vortexes. This is the Hornet in the town of Pinehurst, and is the only siren in town. The siren does a one-minute alert tone for the test.

This is a weekly test of the City of Bedford's Weather Warning Siren System. They test every Friday at Noon, but I am unaware how detailed the procedure is. I have watched a video where their Whelens did Attack/Wail for a tornado warning but, I didn't hear voice...maybe its the dispatcher's mood that determines whether or not it does voice or sounds wail, even during tests. I'm sure they use voice for something, otherwise, why buy 4004s to begin with? According to an article I found (by chance too) there are 10 WPS-4004s in the system, I only found six so far (visually confirmed 5). I also found a 16/16 port Sterling and a Vortex in Mitchell and a Model 5(B?)T in the middle of nowhere. It doesn't even looked like it is hooked up...or if it is I don't know why they would put one there. This 4004 is located on 16TH ST and N St. by a convenience store. I parked in busy parking lot while it was raining. Luckily, it wasn't raining as bad as the 2001-DC recording I did awhile back but it was a much cooler rain that would soak my camera. So what I did was hold a small red umbrella above it. I did nothing whatsoever. I looked in the trunk of the car and randomly found a large, rainbow colored beach umbrella. Embarrassing as it was, I used that to record the siren. After the recording I drove around places where I thought I heard a siren sound after this 4004 shut off. This is a weekly test of all 42 of Daviess County's Outdoor Warning Sirens. Sirens sound at 12 Noon CST (1:00 EST) and sound anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute followed by a silent test, weather permitting. The system is comprised of mostly fin-back Whelen Vortexes with several older sirens included. This fin-back Whelen Vortex R4 is located on Thruston Dermont Rd. nearby the Heritage Baptist Church. For some odd reason, the siren does not start rotating until the windup is complete compared to other Vortexes in Owensboro that start rotating immediately as the tone starts. I was extremely impressed how Daviess County, Kentucky, tested at EXACTLY at 12 Noon. I was watching the clock that was on my laptop and right as the second hand hit twelve, the siren kicked in...no delay. Also keep in mind that this was taken in Daviess County, Kentucky, NOT Daviess County, Indiana, which is also located within the Indiana, Kentucky, & Illinois tri-state region. Again, thank "TheWeatherGuys" for finding this good location and adding it to his map. I was not sure what to record today so I looked on one of his maps and found this good location. This is a Whelen warning siren seated atop the Ashland, MA fire station. It plays the Westminster Chimes at noon, and sounds the "air horn" alert repetedly during a fire call. I've never seen a video of this model of siren playing Westminster Chimes, so I thought it was pretty neat. Note you can hear a clicking noise a couple seconds before the chimes start. This is the sound driver turning on. Any info on the exact model (and correction if it's not Whelen) would be greatly appreciated! © Katsuki Lennox
