DIY: External microphone & battery for the GoPro camera Video Clips. Duration : 2.27 Mins.
I came up with this idea after getting only 25 minute recording times using 2 AAA rechargeable batteries. It now uses 4 AA rechargeable batteries. I have tested this setup for at least 85 minutes now and will post an update when the battery runs out. Also, the camera picks up and records audio decently now. It crackles sometimes, but I plan to add in a small microphone windscreen. Hope someone learns something from my very first DIY video. Update: The battery run time was tested to last 7.5 hours. Another thing is that the batteries weigh down the helmet considerably and messes up my neck.

External Microphone tests using the Canon EOS 550D/60D cameras Video Clips. Duration : 6.50 Mins.
The mono internal microphone is severely limiting in producing reasonable quality audio recordings. It provides only 1 channel, is sensitive to camera handling and wind noise when used outdoors. I wanted to find a cost effective solution to use with the camera when I needed to get better quality, noise free, stereo sound when using the camera both indoors and outside. Without going to the expensive of buying something like the Rode video mike which really makes the camera very prominent whilst trying to be discrete with filming I set about experimenting with less expensive electret microphones and capsules to see what the quality would be like with the 550D/60D. The 3.5mm stereo input jack of the camera also provides power for external electret mikes so this came as a real bonus as cheap capsules could be used without the need for them to have their own power source and electronics. Surprisingly the stereo tie clip microphone ( available of ebay from several retailers) gave good frequency response and sensitivity without excessive background noise. I am no audiophile and my hearing upper limit is decreasing but for general purpose recording this unit IMHO provides good enough stereo signals for most purposes that i need it for. It is easy to add a "dead cat" type fur windshield for outside use and can be attched to the hot shoe of the camera by means of a plastic adaptor which can easily be made by anyone with a few DIY skills. At the request of enthusiastic guest engineers, the JM-1P was brought back to two venues of the Montréal International Jazz Festival for a second year—the outdoor Loto Québec blues stage and the 1458-capacity Théâtre Maisonneuve. In the featured video, the key advantages of the JM-1P are driven home by Hugo Tardif, technical coordinator for Solotech, the festival's sound provider: "Everybody was amazed by how powerful the system was for the quantity of cabinets. Marshall MXL FR-304 Shotgun Microphone unboxing and indoor test Video Clips. Duration : 8.30 Mins.
Needed a better mic, then whats on the camcorder for outdoor fliming as going to be doing interviews, so shotgun was the best choice as they are highly directional and rejects noise around it and going to be booming it above each person as they speak. Was looking for something for a reasonable price as I still need to buy a good indoor stereo microphone and lavalier microphone , found this MXL=FR-304 for 9.99, but only paid 5 for it due to musiciansfriend priced match it. Seems to be crisp and clear will try it outside once I get a good blimp system for it. Never use a shotgun mic on top of the camcorder, always have it boomed or on a mic stand, to keep it out of the film and for better dialogue just have it pointing down at the person toward the person a few inchs above their head. Size of Mic is 21mm diameter and 14" (355.6mm) in length, took a ruler to it. If you are looking for a shotgun mic for youtube don't...Get a stereo lavalier microphone or wireless one instead.
