Meri Banu from 'Behroopiah' Indian film 1971 with Syrian Belly Dancer Faryal and Junior Mehmood Tube. Duration : 4.87 Mins.

Hello! Welcome to Khaartoum Channel. Khaartoum Channel acts as an educational archive of rare commercial East-West artists plus a showcase for Khaartoum songs by my friends and I, or just myself, inspired by East-West media. The aim is to inspire composers with commercial forms in national styles. 'Meri Banu'['My Girl'] is a wonderful and unique belly dance song from 1971 Hindi 007-Style thriller 'Behroopiah' ['Disguise']. The song stars Syrian/Indian Belly Dancer Faryal and child star Junior Mehmood in an 'out of this world' Arab Desert Dance scene to entertain and distract camel traders in order to take their camels! ORCHESTRATION The song is an interesting PASTICHE [a song in the style of] of Arabic music but is surprisingly Indian. The TONALITY [sense of 'sweet' or 'out of tune' notes] is mostlt Indian like DORIAN MODE [a set of notes associated with Indian Ragas] but the use of violins playing tunes built on SEQUENCE [the same melody figure repeated a tone up or down in a pattern] gives an 'Arabian' feeling. The orchestra is quite large and completely ACCOUSTIC [live instruments, nothing electronic]. There is a large PERCUSSION [instruments you hit] is all Indian TABLA [tuned hand drums] and GHUNGROOS [small bells that give top pitches to the texture]. There are no Arab drums. The METRE [number of beats per bar] is counted in 3s. It is not traditional TAAL [Indian beat counting system], it is Western metre. The percussion patterns are varied from ghungroos alone ...
